The book is related from the third-person point of view in the past tense, in a typical style for non-fiction biography. Most of the chapters in the book follow this point of view and are related in a roughly chronological fashion. Thus, Kevin Lewis observes his friends' lifestyle, is recruited by them into the process of counting cards, joins them, receives training, and then pursues several lucrative years at counting cards.
