How does the author use foreshadowing in Brighton Rock?

In Part Three, Chapter Four, Pinkie delicately suggests to Spicer that he take a holiday. The old thug seems grateful, as he desperately wants to run off to Nottingham and disappear into another life. Still, Pinkie states to himself that he is looking at a "dying man", foreshdowing Spicer's death.
