In the story, The Devil is a Busy Man, the narrator's anonymous donation to a friend is set up as a sort of test by the narrator themselves to determine if they are actually a good person or not. It is not the amount of money that is relevant to the narrator, but rather the narrator's ability to keep the donation a true secret that is most important.
