Forgiveness is another theme in the book. The entire purpose of this novel (Patrick's writings) is for Patrick to learn to forgive. Terence tells Patrick to write in order to purge his feelings. Patrick expresses his thoughts, but he does not successfully purge his emotions because he is unable to forgive his father, saying, "I'll kill him! I'll kill him! I'll burn his church and him along with it." He repeats this phrase throughout the novel, and even writes a story about burning down the church. However, this story does not successfully purge Patrick's anger, and he continues to have a lot of pent up anger. Patrick sees that it is necessary for him to forgive (he even admits that Terence was right at some point) but he is still unable to fully let go of the past.
