The piece of paper the narrator is studying at the start of the story symbolizes control. The man thinks that if he can break down the expenses associated with the affair on paper, that he might be able to accurately measure its emotional cost. However, as the narrative unfolds, the narrator ceases to mention the paper, illustrating his inability to rely upon it for order and balance.
