The desire to belong is a recurring idea. While working in the laundry in New York, Sara finds she does not belong among her co-workers because their lives are simply so different. The other young women are filled with talk of boyfriends, evening activities and fashion. Sara has no boyfriend, is too busy in the evenings with her studies and too poor to follow the latest fashions.
