Putnam writes that civic engagement decreased during the Great Depression. This was the only significant dip in involvement during the first half of the century. Putnam believes that the decrease in engagement during this time may be related to increased financial worries and anxiety. He writes that studies have shown that anxiety over money can cause a larger drop in engagement than actual loss of income.
