Differences are a recurring idea in the book. Daniel was born in England at a time when little was known or understood about autism or savant syndrome. Since his parents were young and poor they could have easily decided that a child like Daniel was too much for them to deal with, especially given his constant crying and head banging behavior. However, his parents refused to give up on their son and this attitude persists throughout Daniel's life.
