Japanese Destroyer Captain is a memoir. The memoir details the author, Tameichi Hara's memories of the war in the Pacific, providing a rarely seen Japanese persepctive of the war. Hara survived of more than one hundred sorties (attacks) against the Allies, and he become renown in his homelans as the Unsinkable Captain. Captain Hara is regarded as a hero in Japan, and as a Japanese surface commander, he was highly skilled, aggressive leader.

Important events include the battles of Midway and Guadalcanal, as well as major events during the carrier battles, as seen in the sinking of carrier Ryūjō, during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, and bombing of Shōkaku during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. Hara also details the sinking of his own ship, while headed for a suicide attack on the American fleet at Okinawa.
