She reproduces excerpts from Quintana's creative writing, thus offering an internal perspective into the mind of a person no longer with us. Joan uses the craft of creative writing to give her daughter's character a deeper and more internal voice. At other times, she repeats pieces of dialogue that her daughter once spoke. She takes this dialogue and reprints it in italics, thus giving it the quality of internal monologue. In this way, she is able to thread her daughter's inner voice throughout the manuscript, thus giving life and voice to her perspective as well.
