It is symbolic that William names his van Ghost Dancing, based on the ghost dances performed by Plains Indians in the late 1800s. These dances were an attempt to bring back the old ways of life, and to counter the new life that was encroaching on the Native Americans. William longs for his old life, and even though he knows it cannot return, his trip in Ghost Dancing is a symbolic gesture in which he mimicks his ancestors, and their hopes of bringing back their former way of life.
