Chief Powhatan is the emperor of the Powhatan Empire, and he is very secure in his power and leadership. Powhatan received a prophecy that said the end of his empire would come from the Chesapeake Bay, and therefore, he has great interest in limiting the power and threat of the James Town colony. He reluctantly welcomes James Town into his empire, but when he is insulted by the colonists, he withdraws his assistance in time of need. The colonists repeatedly assault his people, and eventually there is war between his people and the colony. After his death, the prophecy about his empire's end comes true.
