Master Wingfield is a leading member of the Virginia Company and a noble gentleman. He is depicted as an arrogant, who quickly gets into conflict with Captain Smith because of their class differences. Wingfield accuses Smith of plotting to overthrow the colonial government, after which, he becomes the first president of the colony. When he refuses to listen to Capt. Smith's advice, James Town is defenseless against Indian attack. When he is found to be hoarding food as the colonists are starving, he is arrested and sent back to England.
