Captain John Ratcliffe is the captain of the Discovery. He has beady eyes and a long nose, and he greatly dislikes Captain Smith for acting above his station. When Captain Smith is with the Native Americans for a time, Ratcliffe tries to make the colonists build him a presidential house. The colonists refuse to follow him, and so he is sent back to England. He later returns with a large group of colonists and attempts to get Captain Smith to step down as president with the new charter. After Captain Smith is injured and returns to England, Ratcliffe attempts to trade with Chief Powhatan and is tortured to death by the Indians.
