In Chapter 14, we learn that Captain Newport has not returned as planned with supplies. How are the colonists able to survive?

The colonists are well-fed owing to their own meager harvest, trade with Indians, and also the ability to hunt and fish away from the camp, as the friendly tribe of Indians seems to have intervened on behalf of the tribe inimical to the settlers to stop the attacks.
