Samuel learns many leadership skills from Captain Smith. He learns that flying off the handle and embracing his anger is not a good way to operate. In addition, he learns that the best and most politic way to get somewhere is to gain allies by doing the right thing, by avoiding outright violent conflict, and by being fair-minded in word and deed.
