Point of view is important to the success of this story. Although it is told in the third person, we are limited to what Bertha, the protagonist, is thinking. Her state of mind is established at the beginning of the story. Her heightened sense of the advantages she enjoys not only foreshadows the ultimate outcome of the story, but it also sets the stage for the action and the characters.
