In Chapter Twelve, Aldo gives a ring to Jane that is supposed to fill her with fear and give him a sense of power over her. Jane, however, does the unexpected and flaunts the ring.... throwing his intimidation back in his face. The ring he gives her, thus, becomes a symbol of power.
