How does Robert Penn Warren use imagery in Blackberry Winter?

Much of the rural imagery is dark and washed out. The stranger that shows up at Seth's farm has a sense of confusion and menace about him. The swollen river flows under dark clouds. There is a dead cow that supports the other images of impending gloom and danger.
