Magic and religion symbolize the struggle between belief and uncertainty. In this novel, rather than give a further sense of meaning or clarity, the presence of magic only creates more confusion and uncertainty for the characters. Some of the characters hold religious beliefs as mechanism by which to create a sense of hope and understanding. However, Tracker and Leopard have more difficulty with such belief.
