Black Elk Speaks

What is the red stick (flowering stick) that he places in the middle of the sacred hoop? What are the 2 roads that intersect at its center? What do these signify?

Please use references from the book if possible.

The holy stick was a tree. The intersecting roads were named by color.... one red, and one black. The red road is the road of good. The black road is "a fearful road, a road of troubles and of war.
