Effect: Black Beauty becomes ill.

Cause: Black Beauty is taken ill after beging taken on an urgent mission and is treated by the local horse doctor.

Effect: The horse-doctor's questionable treatment makes Beauty weaker.

Part I, Chapter 21

Cause: Balck Beauty's mistress takes ill and goes away to recuperate.

Effect: Black Beauty is forced into hard work and forced the wear a check-rein. His life changes dramatically.
