Who is Tyke from Big Sur and what is their importance?

Tyke the Cat appears twice in the story. The first time is when Kerouac sends instructions to his mother to kiss Tyke for him. The second in when Kerouac learns from Monsanto that Tyke died just shortly after he left. Tyke's death is believed to have been one if the causes of Jack's breakdown.
