A recurring idea in the book is clash of culture. The basic premise in Hall's writings is that man should be aware of his own and other peoples' cultures in intercultural exchanges. There is reference to the alienation of cultures that are suppressed by the predominant Western culture in, what is in effect, cultural imperialism.
