In explaining that the origin of the word Kittur was a corruption, the author tells readers that the town was built on corruption. It solidifies the theme of how corrupted Kittur is. The origin of the word Kittur comes from "a corruption either of "Kiri Uru," meaning "small town," or of "Kittamma's Uru"-Kittamma being a goddess specializing in repelling smallpox and whose temple stood near today's train station" (143).
