Elephants symbolize truth and the natural order of things in this collection of stories. When Chenayya sees the elephant and it's mahout, he is outraged by the unfair weight of the elephant's load, but the second time he sees the elephant, the two seem to have a moment where they say to each other that this is not the right order in the world. It tells readers that men should not be working themselves to death and that majestic creatures should not be enslaved to do a man's bidding. When Gururaj sees an elephant in his story, it represents the true nature of the news and it also shows him how the true nature of things should be.
