Importance of English Words and Language

The English language then symbolizes the power other foreign nations have over India and their people. Whenever a character says a word in English, it sounds more serious. One of the characters, Xerox, even remarks to readers that "He cannot read English, but he knows that English words have power, and that English books have an aura" (44). The journalist Gururaj also thinks of English holds power, which is why he rewrites some of the newspaper in English.
