Why is Beowulf important to British literature?

This is important for several reasons. First, it gives modern man insights into what was important to earlier humans; what mattered to them, what constituted a hero. We can see from this tale that many of the same things that were important then, are still important to this day. Secondly, it is important as a historical document.
