When Grendel attacks the hall, the men are waiting. Unfortunately, their weapons cannot harm him. Beowulf, for a lack of another tactic, grabs Grendel and refuses to let go. Grendel is taken back by Beowulf's strength, and in tearing himself away..... leaves him arm behind. Grendel dies of his wound.
