Who is Nizam from Beneath a Marble Sky: A Novel of the Taj Mahal and what is their importance?

Nizam is Arjumand's slave and bodyguard, who later performs that service for Jahanara. He is strong, loyal to a fault, and perhaps smarter than he looks. Jahanara grants him his freedom, but asks that he serve with Aurangzeb in the army so she can keep tabs on her brother. Nizam helps her to escape her imprisonment, traveling many miles with her to Bijapur. Along the road she discovers that he harbors feeling for her friend, Ladli.
