One of the main themes in the novel is that of the "ideal woman"..... or how the ideal woman comports herself, as well as displays the traits of a good wife and mother. In the novel, this role is filled by Lady Percival, who serves as an example and mentor to Belinda, as Lady Percival encapsulates the kind of woman Melinda wants to be.
