The language of the book is very simple in order to illustrate the simplicity with which Chance views the world. Chance was not taught how to read or write, so his communication skills are based on what he has learned by way of interaction with other people, but more importantly, through watching television. Chance's narrow, limited point of view is used throughout the novel; therefore, the reader is left to make many assumptions about some of the action.
