A good deal of the subject matter with which the author deals is dark and depressing, but she does not allow that darkness to overtake the memoir. Just as she uses Duchess to lighten the tone of her day-to-day life as she is struggling with depression as a result of the divorce, the author allows Duchess to lighten the tone of the memoir.
