Why did Jevtic disobey the orders he was given during the Balkan War (1999)?

Jevtic was order to separate the Croats and Serbs, so that the Croats could be tortured and held captive. He refused to follow orders because he plains was raised to love and respect others, but also because he was independent-minded and did not care about belonging to groups or what they thought of him.
