One symbol in Bartleby the Scrivener is that of walls. The walls in the office represent Bartleby's isolation.... even from his co-workers. His window looks out on another wall, and when sent to jail, Bartleby is set in the courtyard, blocked in by yet another four walls. Walls symbolize isolation and entrapment.
