Coming of age is a recurring idea. Though the novel can be classified as a coming of age story, Barabbas never completes the journey. He spends his life working at becoming something more and at finding answers - just as heroes are bound to do. In this case, however, the answers seem to be always just out of Barabbas' grasp.
