Small towns are another theme in the book. Small towns like the one on the TR where Sara Laughs exists often have their own kind of community connections where everyone seems to know everyone, and outsiders are seldom welcomed with open arms. This lakeside resort locale is no different. It is the kind of town where if you are accepted, you become part of an extended family with all of its warts and blemishes. Mike learns that Sara Laughs has a history that goes back to the late 1800's when a musical group led by a black woman named Sara Tidwell occupied the house.
