At the start of the story, Rita, who is fifteen-years-old, has been caught along with one of her girlfriends, spending the night with two boys. As a result, her parents have given her two choices...... spending the summer with her Grandma and Grandpa is Puerto Rico or spending the summer on a retreat at a Catholic convent. Rita chooses to spend the summer with her grandparents.
