For a novel with a young-adult target audience, the characters speak surprisingly naturally, without too much slang or other language that would date the novel too much. They, and the exposition, do use more complex words than the average teenager might (such as "magnanimous"), which will help students wishing to build their vocabularies or studying for the SAT. However, the language is still simple enough that younger readers could understand it, though the sexual and alcohol content of the book make it less appropriate for younger readers.
