One main theme in the novel is that of religion. Over the course of the novel, we see Father Tim questioning his ability to properly lead his parishioners.... he feels burnt out and ineffective. As readers, we become aware of Father Tim's value within his church immediately..... seeing the things that he cannot. We see the way his congregation looks to him for guidance, and we also see the effect of his words on those he doesn't even know are listening.
