What is the theme in Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb?

One major theme in the novel is that of loyalty. Loyalty is fickle, even in the best of families. Over the course of the novel, we see that loyalty is embodied by Fitz's experiences. His dogs teach him the meaning of loyalty, whereas, the members of his family teach him the opposite.
