He resents his younger brother especially in relation to their mother, he taunts Jewel, He keeps pointing to buzzards that are flying overhead, he tells Jewel that he is adopted, and he insures that he is nowhere near home when Addie dies. Later he will burn down a barn and start referring to himself in 3rd person.
