The entire story is told as a flashback. Gail does not keep a journal, so she tells the story in a conversational tone as she reflects back on the period of her life. The story has fourteen, untitled chapters that explain her life as the trouble begins with a two-page prologue to provide insight into the nature of her relationship with her boyfriend Steve. The average chapter length is just a little over twelve pages.
