Who is Daniel Swan from Anywhere but Here and what is their importance?

Daniel Swan was Ann's first love. Although his family lives in a mansion in Beverly Hills, they are deeply in debt and like Ann's family, own no furniture. Daniel calls his mother "The Witch" and his father "The Failure". He does not judge Ann when he learns that she lives in a tiny furnished studio apartment with her mother.
