why did the gods treat Antigone the way they did

The gods, it can be argued, honored Antigone's act. They did allow Creon to punish her, but then later softened his heart so that he would come and release her. Of course, he was too late as she kills herself. The gods then allow Creon's son (Antigone's fiance) to kill himself, thus ending Creon's line.
