Woodrow Hamilton, Victoria Self, Mr. Wallace, and Mr. Appleton are associated with Jones' history and practice as a prostitute. Hamilton is an acquaintance who introduces Jones to the very businesslike Miss Self, who in turn runs what would now be described as an escort agency. The unstable Mr. Wallace, who seems to be a very thinly veiled portrait of renowned playwright Tennessee Williams, is one of the agency's clients. The well-off Mr. Appleton, by contrast, seems much more rational than Mr. Williams. He not only uses Jones sexually, but he also seems to enjoy his company.
