How does Gilbert Blythe impact Anne's character in Anne of Green Gables?

At the very beginning of the story he is an antagonist for Anne...calling her 'carrots' for her red hair. Later, however, his act of selflessness opens her eyes to how kind and gentle he really is. Without his act of generosity she would not have been able to remain with Marilla after Matthew died.
