Ms. Quack Quack is a name that Anne's teacher gave her because she wouldn't quit talking in class. He reprimanded her and gave her an extra writing assignment as a punishment. Peter, who attended the same schoool, had heard of it and teases Anne about it. She is appalled and embarrassed that he would bring it up. This early interaction between then shows that they are both lonely and looking for some companionship. We also learn that Peter was very much a loner in school, whereas Anne was very popular.
