Anne Frank

In The Diary of Anne Frank (the play), why is Mr. Frank in the warehouse in scene one, and what occurs that he does not expect? Why does the playwright open the play with this scene?(Glencoe Edition)

He has returned after the war to the hiding place. He is the only one that has survived. He finds the many colored scarf that Anne made him for Hanukkah, which he did not expect. Moreso, Miep is there and she hands him Anne's diary. The writer most likely did this because he wanted the audience to see how broken and bitter Mr. Frank now was.
