Each reacts differently to Miep's cake. Having a cake during this time was such a special treat that they are all touched and excited by her generosity. Mr. Frank thanks her profusely, as does Anne. Margot is not feeling well. Dussel argues with Mrs. Van Daan because he believes that she gives her husband bigger portions. Mr. Vaan Daan believes he needs to defend his wife. Peter is embarrassed by them both. Later, Mr. Van Daan attempts to take Margot's piece of cake, reasoning that she's ill and wouldn't want it anyway. What this shows is that they have all become tired of being cooped up together for so long. They are getting on each other's nerves.
